How to choose the projector screen?

In this evaluation, we choose three different projection objects as movie screens to do the test, like a light-resistant projector screen, white plastic screen, and white walls, and they were completed in two scenes of turn-on/off lights. They are very different when viewed by the human eye, and there is still a slight difference between the picture captured by the camera and the picture viewed by the human eye.

Whitewall for home projector screen

The movie screen is projected onto the wall, and then reflected the human eye through the diffuse reflection of the wall; the white wall also presents the original image of the projector. The disadvantage of a white wall is that the gain is low and it cannot resist the interference of ambient light. When the light is turned on or the ambient light is strong, the picture will be grey and white.
In our actual test scene, the effects of the two different environments, turn on/off lights, are quite different.
In the light-off environment, the picture contrast is still relatively high, the color performance is relatively bright, and you can feel the cinematic look and feel.

After turning on the lights, the picture presented is a bit unsatisfactory. After turning on the light, the picture becomes white and the picture color is not bright enough.

A white plastic screen measurement

The picture difference between the white plastic screen and a white wall is not big. The white plastic screen will have a softer look and feel. However, the white plastic screen adopts the structure of PVC+ woven fabric and cannot resist the interference of ambient light; the general white plastic screen gains in Around 1, the viewing angle is greater than 160 degrees. From the perspective of movie screen performance and presentation, it is closer to the white wall. What is the effect? Let's take a look below.
It can be seen from the real shots that the white plastic screen has relatively high contrast and the colors are bright enough when the lights are turned off.

After the lights are turned on, the picture performance is the same as the effect cast on the white wall when the lights are turned on, the contrast is significantly reduced, the colors are not bright enough, and the picture is grey and white. Especially the black area in the lower-left corner of the screen is greyish. The picture effect presented by the white plastic screen and the white wall is not very different, so it seems that the white plastic screen is more suitable for projector users who do not have a white wall in their homes. The dust is also similar to the grey screen with the principle of white plastic, and the principle of the white plastic screen is similar. The white plastic screen is not painted into dust, which improves the means and reduces our gain. We don't have a grey screen, for the time being, so we can't show you the effect of the grey screen.

Light rejecting screen

The light rejecting screen we measured is the FSCREEN S1 picture scroll optical screen, which belongs to the anti-light soft screen. The screen material is made of polymer resin; the light resistance is mainly to change the light refraction path through the internal microstructure and direct the diffuse reflection loss light from other angles to the comfortable visual field of the human eye. The suppression of the ambient light is through the absorption And reflection, changing the noisy route of the light path, to achieve the effect of resisting ambient light. This is the principle of light rejecting screens.
From the principle point of view, the light rejecting screen can only play its greatest role in an environment with sufficient light and lights. And when the lights are turned on, the difference between the light rejecting screen and the white plastic and white wall can be seen at a glance.

When the Dangbei Mars Pro laser projector is matched with a grey light rejecting screen, the picture is very close to the TV. Especially in the light-on environment, the picture has bright colors, high color reproduction, and the performance of the dark areas is also very clear, which makes us amazed.

But the light rejecting screen is not perfect either. The light rejecting screen is limited by the viewing angle, the picture will become darker when viewed from the side, and as the angle increases, the picture will become darker, as shown in the figure below.

How to choose the home projector screen?

Of course, there are many types of projector screens. In addition to white plastic and light-resistant soft screens, there are also light-resistant hard screens and glass bead screens. Various types of screens also have their advantages and disadvantages. For example, the disadvantage of a light-resistant hard screen is that it is expensive, and the disadvantage of a glass bead screen is that it has a short life. There is no very good option. Finally, I summarize the following points to choose a projector screen.

How to choose the home projector screen

Projector screen selection reference:

1. In pursuit of picture contrast, choose grey screens, which can be grey plastic, grey beads, grey light rejecting screens, and so on.
2. Pursuing brightness gain, choose metal screen and light rejecting screen.
3. For daytime use, light rejecting screens are recommended.
4. It can be used at night without a screen, and the effect is better with a grey screen.

Hi, I have a Dangbei Mars Pro projector, and I’m looking to buy a xyscreen black Crystal screen to project on a size of 127”, mainly what I want is to improve the projection a bit during the day and have a better contrast, since at night I am totally satisfied.
I don’t know if you have any knowledge of these screens or if you have any to advise me.

Best regards Rodrigo Antelo
