The official interpretation of the A55 reads as follows.

The Cortex-A55 is built on the latest ARMv8.2 architecture and builds on its predecessor. It pushes the limits in terms of performance while still maintaining the same level of power consumption as the Cortex-A53. We have made every effort to improve the Cortex-A53 and give it the following features.

➤ Memory performance up to twice that of Cortex-A53 at the same frequency and process conditions

➤ 15% more efficient than Cortex-A53 at the same frequency and process conditions

➤ More than 10 times more expandable than Cortex-A53.

The positioning of the ARM Cortex Series 5 as "high efficiency" and Series 7 as "high performance" is a fact of life. 

GPU Comparison:  

The Mali G31 has also improved its power performance compared to the T830. 

As you can see from the table above, the T972 is indeed an upgrade to the T968, but at the expense of the USB 3.0 port, it cannot yet be called a "replacement"
