What does HDR10+ mean? What are the advantages of projectors with HDR10+ function?

HDR10+ is actually an improvement on HDR10, which not only continues the advantages of HDR, but also has its own advantages of better image quality. hdr10+'s advantages are mainly in image quality, hardware cost, free use and freedom of open standards.

HDR, known as High Dynamic Range, is a picture optimization technology that makes the picture brighter, with higher contrast and more detail in dark areas. For display devices, after HDR is turned on, the screen brightness is adjusted and the contrast between the brightest and darkest parts of the screen is enhanced, allowing the screen to show more layers and expose more details of the screen.

HDR10 is an upgraded version of HDR. HDR10 increases the brightness of the picture by a further two times while deepening the contrast between chromatic aberrations and making the tunable color content nearly ten times higher than HDR. The definition of "10" comes from the 10-bit color depth. In addition, HDR10 is recommended to use absolute value display with Rec.2020 and PQ, using static data processing. Currently, HDR10 is the most basic HDR standard and does not charge royalties.

HDR10+ is an upgraded version of HDR10. HDR10 has a maximum brightness of 1000nit, while HDR10+ has a maximum brightness of 4000nit and an enhanced contrast ratio.

The difference between HDR10 and HDR10+ is the processing method. HDR10 uses static data processing, while HDR10+ is dynamic data processing. Dynamic data processing allows it to make changes to each video frame, meaning that each frame will have its own brightness and contrast data, which is its biggest advantage.

HDR10+ was created mainly by Samsung to rival Dolby Vision and is currently the only HDR standard that supports dynamic data element structure. The difference between the two is that Dolby Vision requires a royalty fee, while HDR10+ is an open standard. In recent years, HDR10+ has grown rapidly, with more and more display devices being certified, and most of the projectors released in 2021 will be upgraded from HDR10 to HDR10+.

The advantages of HDR10+

  1. Image quality improvement

The most important reason for upgrading HDR10+ is definitely the improvement in picture quality, which can provide viewers with a more layered, detailed picture of bright areas and dark areas.

  1. No royalties

HDR10+ is the only dynamic HDR technology that does not require royalty payments. Although this technology was developed by Samsung, Samsung does not charge any royalty fees.

  1. Open standards

Open standards mean that any company using HDR10+ can refine and improve it, and it is not closed like Dolby Vision is.
